Cycling along coast in Cadiz

Cádiz wants to become a more sustainable city by creating a network of bike lanes that provide safe, fast and efficient mobility

About Cadiz

Cadiz logo

Cádiz is a coastal city and provincial capital in the Andalusia region of Spain. Cádiz is located on a small promontory island and is joined to mainland by a narrow link. A consequence of being surrounded by the sea, Cádiz's urban beaches and mild coastal climate make it an appealing tourist attraction. The city has the highest population density within the province and is comprised of a dense network of streets. Any urban growth is limited due to Cádiz's location on the water, which also helps to create a strong connection between the settlement area and the natural environment.

Main cycling challenges

Cádiz knows it will have to deal with opposition (from car users, local shop and restaurants owners, leisure and commercial activities) in continuing to build the city's first kilometers of cycle lanes. The city is concerned with finding ways to change people’s relationship to the private car, which is currently the main mode of transport in Cádiz, and to avoid any repercussions on other, more sustainable modes of transport (walking and public transport). Actions have been taken to remove parking lanes in order to build the bike lanes due to the lack of space in the city.

Cycling solutions

Cadiz is piloting a wide range of integrated measures, which cut across more than one measure category, as part of its SUMP action plan. Cadiz will furthermore be learning from all cities involved in Handshake and will be piloting measures from all three Cycling Capitals.
